Andrzej Wereszczak, an incredible Polish ultrarunner, took part in the 48-hour race during the 15th Athens Ultramarathon Festival on January 10, 2020. Twenty-five runners from around the world participated in the event. Besides Andrzej, another Pole, Piotr Kardas, also participated. The runners ran a 1-kilometer loop—200 meters indoors and 800 meters on asphalt.
We are thrilled to announce that Andrzej Wereszczak has become the new men’s record holder, taking first place in the OPEN category! He covered a distance of 385km, breaking the previous record held by Łukasz Sagan by 4km.
The race was difficult for him, as he recalls on his website:
“Around the 40th hour of the race, I kept having sleep deprivation issues. It was as if my brain would momentarily shut down. I was hallucinating. Sometimes I would say strange words without any control. The constant running in and out of the brightly lit arena into the dark parking lot and back also made things more difficult. The route was spinning under my feet. I started taking regular rests, sitting down and closing my eyes for 10 minutes about every 20 km. I thought a mini-nap would be enough for 2-3 hours of running. Unfortunately, it turned out to be too short. Fortunately, the last 10 hours of the race were better. It became pleasantly warm, the sun was shining behind the clouds, and the sleepiness almost disappeared. Towards the end, I managed to pick up the pace and add 3 km to my minimum*. I’m glad I ran quite quickly in the final stretch and finished the race in style.
* The minimum plan was to add 1 km to Łukasz Sagan’s 381 km Polish Men’s Record. Before the race, I thought Patrycja Bereznowska’s 401 km Polish Women’s and Open Record was within reach.
We’re thrilled to be able to support Andrzej in achieving his athletic goals. We congratulate him on his incredible willpower and wish him continued success.
